Mother Fagan Needs Help!

I've come across this video on my FB timeline. It shows an old lady about 83 years old on her way home after gathering fire wood so that she could cook some fritters. She has run out of gas electric and her home is in disrepair. When it rains the house gets wet inside as the roof collapsed and there are no funds to fix it. She is ill and so is her husband. St Matthew and his wife Natalia see her in the street and give her some money to assist. Mother Fagan says she knows it was God who sent them and thanks God for the help. Upon further discussion they learn her situation is in need of further help and he promises to provide some basic things for her. If you can help contact St Matthew for more information.

Emancipation Day Jamaica

Today marks the 176 year anniversary of Emancipation Day in Jamaica. Slaves were freed and slavery ended on 1st August 1838. Slavery itself in the British colonies was ended four years earlier in 1834 but it was made official in Jamaica on Emancipation Day.

You can read the Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen's message here. Where he discusses Jamaicans tasting freedom for the 1st time and the hopes they would have had for the future not just themselves but for the nation. He also reflects on the current state of Jamaica. Worth a read.

Let us reflect on those gone by who fought the battle to freedom and many who lost their lives along the way.

Lucas DiPasquale Covers PopCaan

My friend sent me this video to look at of Lucas DiPasquale who hails from Canada. He has done a really good and impressive acoustic cover of Reggae Dancehall artist Popcaan's songs. The feedback has been good too on his video. So good that he has been featured in the Jamaican Gleaner.

Vybz Kartel - Guilty

The verdict is in Dancehall Reggae artist Vybz Kartel aka Adidja Palmer has been found guilty of murder along with his co-accused. Throughout the trial text and blackberry messages were retrieved and read out which pointed to one of the most heinous crimes being committed. Although a body has never been found, the evidence suggested the body was disposed of as a way to cover up the truth.

Kartel's loyal fans have been demonstrating and chanting free"World Boss". Since the verdict was announced many have been divided over the verdict. Some have argued that the justice system is messed up. However many argue that finally they can see the justice system working the way it should be and that fame and fortune is not being held above justice. What are your thoughts?

Home Again - Movie

I heard about this film on YouTube by Trabass Tv. It is called Home Again and is about Jamaicans who have lived most of their lives in Canada who for whatever reason are deported back to their land of birth. They are now faced with adjusting to a place they do not really know whilst trying to get back on their feet. The movie stars Tatyana Ali, Fefe Dobson, Lyriq Bent, Stephen James and will also get to see famed Jamaican actor Carl Bradshaw.  The UK will get a red carpet premiere 30th October 2013 at the British Museum of which you can purchase tickets to watch. Check out the trailer it looks really good.

Michigan Choir | Long Time Gal

I saw this on FB though after doing a Youtube search it came up that this was indeed 3yrs old. It is of an American university choir singing a traditional Jamaican song called "Long Time Gal".


Below is a video showing a more traditional way the song is sung. I think the Michigan choir did a very good interpretation. Enjoy.

Jamaica gets 123 in 200m final

I am so proud of Usain Bolt and his fellow athletes of Team JA, Blake and Weir.  Usain Bolt has now won both 100m and 200m Gold at two consecutive olympics. I actually thought it would be a tight race between him and Blake but he excelled. There were no new world records but Jamaica and her diaspora are truly celebrating the 50th year Independence anniversary with a whole new sense of pride. Jamaica may be a small island in comparison to the UK and America but they love sports and truly have been excelling. Many people may complain about Bolt non-serious pre race antics but I love it. It makes the sport exciting and less boring. If you cant have fun in what you do why bother.

Jamaica has come a long way. There still may be many rivers to cross but Jamaica land we love. Happy Anniversary.

I laughed out loud when I first watched this clip. However I know most people in my family would be disgusted at her behaviour. Yes she is vex because it seems a bigger lady almost sat on her leg, however this is not the best way to carry herself. She is not even in Yard and a gwan so. Most Jamaicans do not behave this way. Though one thing is for sure. When a Jamaican is cussing woiii dem a cuss hard ta raatid. To be honest it sounds far worst than it really is. Though yes it is still bad.

Update: Having shown this to my husband and some born Jamaican friends. They enlightened me a bit. The lady being cussed out is a grown ass woman. The young lady is clearly being disrespectful. She has issues that need to be dealt with. If she was back home in Jamaica the end result would have been different.

R.I.P. Gregory Isaacs

The legendary Reggae singer Gregory Isaacs (19 July 1951- 25 October 2010) has passed away. He had ben battling lung cancer for sometime. During his career he had released 100s of albums. One of his most famous songs was Night Nurse which is still popular today.

Jamaica Independence Day

Today is Jamaica’s Independence Day. 48 years without any foreign rule. Let us hope the island prospers on.

I can just imagine the amount of parties and celebrations taking place across the island.

So to all my fellow Jamaicans, big up unno self. Unno large and everyt’ing sell off! Seen.

Jamaica in Emergency State

Jamaica is where my belated Parents born and grow. My Father emigrated to the UK during the Windrush era whilst my Mum came along shortly after. Jamaica is a place where a huge part of my culture I.D. and tradition comes from. It saddens me to see the current state of affairs in Jamaica.

This is a situation that has been brewing for almost a year. The Americans want a man who is both deemed a notorious gangster but also a Business man and public saviour. Jamaican politics has always been caught up in some form of corruption. Some of this is thanks to the very people who seek their wanted man. Think about it. In JA Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, is not necessarily a wanted man. Jamaica like many other countries has some areas which are deemed very violent and crime ridden. One of these areas is Downtown Kingston which the JA constabulary have failed to bring under control. ‘Dudus’ living in JA after a spate abroad has managed to bring some calm to the area. He is one of many “area Dons” that are looking after the people that the government is not. His notoriety comes from his association with Jamaican Gang the Shower Posse. They were featured on BET American Gangster documentary show.

Much of the violence is contained however if the authorities fail to reach a resolution or bring this under control it could escalate. Other parishes are already starting to be affected somewhat. The Jamaican government, the capitalists the IMF and World Bank each have to share part of the blame. (Look up the relationship between them and what rules they impose). No country should be in a state where an alleged criminal, gangster, area don etc can without trying hold so much respect that people would die for them and go against the law. No one is going to bite the hand that feeds them. Which can clearly be seen by the blockades and protests taking place right now.

I do wonder why Bruce Golding and the rest of JA government made this about turn decision. For months and months Jamaica refused to give America what she wanted. She knew far too well that in doing so the peace of the island would become fragile and definitely hostile. America has been cancelling Visa’s of Jamaican citizens for no reason at all, which has affected prominent entertainers and business people.

So now Kingston, the islands capital is under a State of Emergency order which is in place for at least a month. Almost immediately America put out a travel warning. I do wonder if the extradition was halted and they agreed to have his trial in JA would they have been met with so much hostility? Vivian Blake who also belonged to the same gang as Dudus was imprisoned in America. He was released and deported only to die 1yr later.

So many people have lost their lives, army, police, civilians and criminals. Question is how long before relative peace is restored and what state will downtown Kingston be in once “Dudus”is removed (alive or not)? Will the blatant robberies and muggings commence again? What about the innocent people caught up in this crossfire?
